...ภายหลังเหตุการณ์ธรณีพิบัติภัยแผ่นดินไหวครั้งใหญ่ใต้ทะเลจนเกิดคลื่นยักษ์สึนามิถล่ม 6 จังหวัดบนชายฝั่งอันดามันของคาบสมุทรไทยเมื่อปลายปี 2547 ผมได้ร่วมกับหลากหลายฝ่ายลงไปช่วยเหลือบรรเทาทุกข์และฟื้นฟูชีวิตชุมชนผู้ ประสบภัยตลอดแนวชายฝั่งอย่างต่อเนื่อง อีกทั้งช่วงนั้นยังอยู่ระห่างดำเนินเรื่องการจัดตั้งหอจดหมายเหตุพุทธทาส อินทปัญโญ แห่งสวนโมกขพลาราม ไชยา จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี เป็นเหตุให้ผมต้องวนเวียนไปมาจนได้ยินข่าวกระทั่งระลึกได้ว่าบริเวณนี้มีการ ศึกษาและขุดค้นหาลูกปัดโบราณกันมานานแล้ว อาทิเช่น ที่แหลมโพธิ์, เขาศรีวิชัย (จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี) และเขาสามแก้ว (จังหวัดชุมพร) ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งอ่าวไทย หรือที่ควนลูกปัด (จังหวัดกระบี่) ทุ่งตึก-เหมืองทอง เกาะคอเขา (จังหวัดพังงา) และที่ภูเขาทอง (จังหวัดระนอง) ทางฝั่งอันดามัน

นี่เป็นคำบอกเล่าเรื่องลูกปัดที่ได้ยินจากแทบทุกแหล่งในภาคใต้ ตลอดสองชายฝั่งทะเล ไล่ตั้งแต่ชุมพร สุราษฎร์ธานีทางตะวันออก เรื่อยมาจนถึงระนอง พังงา กระบี่ทางตะวันตก แต่ ในปัจจุบันเมื่อตระเวนไปตามสถานที่ต่างๆที่ว่าเป็นแหล่งลูกปัดกลับพบว่าลูก ปัดซึ่งเดิมละเลยหรือทิ้งทอยเล่นถูกเปลี่ยนสถานะมาเป็นเครื่องประดับล้ำค่า ของผู้คนในละแวกนั้นๆ อีกทั้งมีการแสวงหาสะสมกันอย่างกว้างขวาง อย่างที่ไม่เคยปรากฏมาก่อนในรอบหลายปีที่ผ่านมา โดยชาวบ้านยังคงเชื่อกันว่าเป็นสมบัติตกหล่นจากเรือสินค้าอับปางหรือฝังไว้ เพราะ ไม่ทันไปร่วมสร้างพระธาตุที่เมืองนครด้วยพบลูกปัดตามแหล่งริมฝั่งทะเลรายรอบ พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์นครศรีธรรมราชทั้งที่ไม่พบร่องรอยชุมชนบ้านเมืองหรือหลุมศพ แต่อย่างใด เท่าที่เล่ากันมา พบว่าความนิยมลูกปัดเริ่มขึ้นเมื่อราวๆ ๓๐ ถึง ๔๐ ปีก่อน มีคำบอกกล่าวตรงกันว่าเริ่มแรกมีคนสุพรรณจากอำเภออู่ทองตระเวนมายังภาคใต้ เพื่อขอเช่าพื้นที่ขุดหาลูกปัดและขนกลับไปขาย ถึงขนาดมาแล้วก็ขนกลับไปเป็นคันรถ จากนั้นคนในพื้นที่ก็เริ่มขุดกันเองโดยมีผู้ซื้อมาคอยเฝ้าอยู่ตามปากหลุม ถ้ายังไม่มีผู้ซื้อ ลูกปัดจะถูกเก็บรวบรวมไว้สำหรับรอส่งไปขายที่เมืองสุพรรณ ลูกปัดเหล่านี้มีทั้งที่บรรจุเป็นถัง พกพาเป็นขวด หรือร้อยเข้าเส้นเป็นพวง จนในที่สุดลูกปัดปักษ์ใต้ก็มีจำนวนลดน้อยลงพร้อมกับการเพิ่มระดับความเข้ม งวดกวดขันของทางการ โดยในปัจจุบันการค้นหาลูกปัดทำได้ไม่ง่ายเหมือนในอดีตคือต้องแอบลักลอบขุด แล้วค่อยทยอยรับส่งกันตามนัดหมาย แต่กระนั้นก็ยังมีคนแวะเวียนมาเสาะหาไม่ขาดสาย ส่งผลให้มีลูกปัดปักษ์ใต้หลายแบบมีชื่อเสียงร่ำลือจนกลายเป็นของยอดนิยมใน แวดวงคนรักลูกปัด  ไม่ว่าจะเป็นลูกปัดตาตะกั่วป่าหรือลูกยอแหลมโพธิ์ ที่รู้จักกันอย่างกว้างขวางในแวดวงลูกปัดระดับโลก ถึงขนาดตั้งชื่ออย่างเป็นเอกลักษณ์ว่า Takuapa Eye Bead ลูกปัดชนิดนี้ขึ้นชื่อลือเลื่องในฐานะตาวิเศษ คอยช่วยคุ้มครองป้องกันภัยให้กับผู้ห้อยแขวน นอกจากลูกยอแล้วบริเวณแหลมโพธิ์ยังพบลูกปัดที่ชาวบ้านเรียกว่า‘นกยูง’หลากหลายลวดลายและสีสัน จนถึงขั้นกล่าวกันว่านกยูงแหลมโพธิ์เป็นสุดยอดของความงามในบรรดาลูกปัดทีเดียว  หน้าอินเดียนแดง หรือ สุริยเทพคลองท่อม นับเป็นลูกปัดปักษ์ใต้ชิ้นสำคัญที่สุดเนื่องจากในโลกนี้มี  รายงานการพบเฉพาะ ที่คลองท่อมเท่านั้น อย่างไรก็ดีมีผู้สันนิษฐานว่าสุริยเทพคลองท่อมน่าจะผลิตในสมัยกรีก-โรมันที่ เมืองอเล็กซานเดรียซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนชายฝั่งทะเลเมดิเตอเรเนียนในประเทศอียิปต์ ทวีปอาฟริกา ด้วยรูปลักษณ์อันโดดเด่นจึงมีการสร้างคุณค่าและเพิ่มความสำคัญให้แก่สุริย เทพคลองท่อมมากขึ้นโดยอ้างกันว่าจะส่งเสริมผู้เป็นเจ้าของให้ทำมาค้าคล่อง ดังนั้นจึงไม่น่าแปลกใจที่สุริยเทพคลองท่อมกลายเป็นลูกปัดที่หลายๆคนหมาย มั่นต้องการเห็นสักครั้งหนึ่งในชีวิต ในขณะที่วงการลูกปัดโลกล้วนประหลาดใจเพราะในเมืองอเล็กซานเดรียยังไม่มีการ ขุดพบเลย ล่าสุดมีรายงานการพบลูกปัดลักษณะนี้ในประเทศจีน บริเวณหลุมศพโบราณบนเส้นทางสายไหมแถบเมือง Yingpan มณฑล Xinjiangลูกบอลกับลูกรักบี้  คือ ลูกปัดที่ทำจากหินสีเทาเข้มหรือสีดำแล้วมีการเขียนลายเส้นสีขาวอย่างลายลูก ฟุตบอล ทั้งลูกบอลและลูกรักบี้เมื่อถูกสวมใส่จะขึ้นคอจนเข้มขับ ตอกย้ำความเชื่อที่ว่าใครครอบครองจะอยู่ยงคงกระพัน ลูกปัดชนิดนี้พบมากเป็นพิเศษที่เขาสามแก้ว ถัดจากเขาสามแก้วลงมาทางใต้ที่อำเภอท่าชนะ จะพบลูกปัดเม็ดเหลี่ยมน้ำงามและลูกปัดรูปสัตว์ซึ่ง ทำด้วยเทคนิคเจียรนัยแบบโบราณ(Lapidary)ฝีมือประณีตบรรจงมาก ว่ากันว่าบรรดารูปสัตว์เหล่านี้มีส่วนเสริมสร้างอำนาจบารมีให้ผู้เป็นเจ้า ของคล้องคอสำหรับทุ่นโมเสคแก้ว หรือ ‘โมร็อคโค’ ของบางกล้วย มีชื่อในเรื่องความสวยงามของเนื้อแก้วสีที่สอดสลับ และแม้จะยังไม่มีการเติมคุณค่าหรือปรากฏการณ์พิเศษเข้าไป โมร็อคโคก็ได้กลายเป็นลูกปัดในดวงใจของหลายคนที่พบเห็น ไม่ไกลจากบางกล้วยคือภูเขาทองที่นี่แบ่งลูกปัดออกเป็น ๒ จำพวกคือ เม็ดเล็กๆเรียก “ลูกปัด” ส่วนเม็ดใหญ่เรียก“โหรา” โดยโหรายอดนิยมคือโหราหลอดด้าย หรือกลองยาวซึ่งมีลักษณะเป็นทรงกระบอกกลมคอดกิ่วตรงกลางอย่างหลอดด้าย รวมถึงโหราเม็ดเหลี่ยมและรูปสัตว์ ซึ่งงดงามไม่แพ้บรรดาลูกปัดขุดพบที่เขาสามแก้วและท่าชนะ  สุดท้ายคือ อิฐไส้ดำจากท่าเรือ นางย่อน ซึ่ง อาจดูไม่สวยเด่นเมื่อเทียบกับลูกปัดชนิดอื่นๆ แต่หากเทียบกันในเรื่องความเชื่อถือศรัทธารับรองว่าอิฐไส้ดำนำมาเป็นอันดับ ต้นๆ เพราะมีชื่อเทียบชั้นมหาอุด หยุดปืนให้ยิงไม่ออกแล้วยังสามารถกันกระสุนให้ยิงไม่เข้า ถือเป็นลูกปัดซึ่งนิยมเสาะแสวงหาในแวดวงคนกล้าๆ กลัวๆ นิยมเล่นคุณไสย สะสมเครื่องปกป้องคุ้มครองตัว  ซึ่งเมื่อได้ศึกษาค้นคว้าจริงจังถึงได้พบว่ามีจำนวนมากมายและ หลายหลากกว่าที่คิด เฉพาะเรื่องความสวยงามอย่างเดียวก็เกินกว่าถ้อยคำใดจะบรรยายไม่นับรวมถึงเรื่องราวและความเป็นมาที่ยากจะบอกเล่าได้หมดอาทิ... ใครคือเจ้าของ ใครทำ ทำอย่างไร ทำที่ไหน ทำเมื่อไหร่ ใช้เพื่ออะไร และทิ้งไว้อย่างนี้ทำไม?
